Allen Sweeps Fredericksburg Precincts
Only 2.8 percent of city voters went to the polls in the U.S. Senate GOP primary, but George Allen won by a landslide.
U.S. Senate candidate George Allen easily won Tuesday's Republican Party primary and swept all five precincts in Fredericksburg where only 428 voters showed up to the polls Tuesday.
The 428 voters represents 2.885 percent of the 14,832 total registered voters in Fredericksburg. Typically, the most motivated voters show up at primaries, said University of Mary Washington Political Science Professor Stephen Farnsworth.
Allen, who will face Democrat Tim Kaine in November, won 63.78 percent of the vote in Fredericksburg. Tea Party activist Jamie L. Radtke came in a distant second with 19.39 percent of the vote. Only 18 people cast an absentee ballot, and Allen had eight of those.
Walker-Grant Middle School precinct 301 had the most voters with 128, one more than Dorothy Hart Community Center precinct 201. Allen got 94 votes at precinct 301 and 75 at precinct 201.
Statewide results were similar. Allen got 65.45 percent of the votes for 167,262 total, with Radtke a distant second with 23.06 percent of the vote or 58,930. In Virginia, 255,523 of 5,198,406 total voters or 4.915 percent, went to the polls.
Prince William County's longtime delegate Bob Marshall finished third and attorney E.W. Jackson finished fourth.
Kaine issued the following statement Tuesday night:
"I want to congratulate George Allen for his victory in tonight's primary. As we move into the general election phase of this campaign, Virginians are faced with a stark choice between two very different visions for our country's future."
