Area Schools Remain Closed

Fredericksburg City School Students Get Early Christmas Break

School systems across the region remained closed for a second straight day as area residents dug themselves out of the small snowstorm which blanketed the region on Dec. 16. The school systems of the city of Fredericksburg, Stafford County and Spotsylvania County were all closed today.

The weather eventually meant that students attending Fredericksburg City Public Schools received an extra two days of winter vacation tacked onto the their holiday. Today, Friday Dec. 17 was to be their last day of school before break.

Officials with the Fredericksburg City Public School administration say that the recent snow days will likely not affect the school calendar later on the year.

Virginia law requires schools to hold at least 180 days or 990 hours of instructional time. Debbie Wright, administrative assistant to the superintendent of the Fredericksburg public school system says that the school calendar exceeds those requirements.

"We have built additional time into the school day to exceed those minimun requirements," said Wright. "This early on, there's not yet a need for the board to consider changing the calendar."
