Arrest in Julie Serna Gonzales Shooting

Husband Arthur Gonzales, an FBI agent, turned himself in to Stafford law enforcement Friday.

Arthur Gonzales, the estranged husband of Julie Serna Gonzales, turned himself in to detectives at the Stafford Sheriff’s Office on Friday evening.

Gonzales, 42, has been charged with one count of 2nd degree murder and one count of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the shooting death of his wife, said Bill Kennedy, Stafford Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

On April 19 multiple units of the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office responded to 59 Alderwood Drive for a report of a domestic call involving a shooting, Kennedy said.

In a recording of the 9-1-1 call obtained by the Las Cruces Sun-News, Arthur Gonzales told the 9-1-1 operator that he had shot his wife.  "She just attacked me with a knife and I had to shoot her," he said.

During the call -- which went to the Las Cruces, N.M. 9-1-1 dispatch center due to what the Sun-News reported was "outdated account information on an Internet phone line" -- the operator struggles to recognize the street name Gonzales keeps repeating.  The couple and their two young boys had lived in Las Cruces for several years, according to the Sun-News.

Finally on the line with a Virginia 9-1-1 operator, Gonzales said, "It's on my holster.  I'm an FBI agent."

Deputies arriving at the home found Julie Serna Gonzales suffering from gunshot wounds. She was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"Stafford County Detectives have been actively investigating this incident and the results of that investigation were presented to a Special Stafford County Grand Jury today," Kennedy said. The Grand Jury issued two indictments against Arthur Gonzales, who turned himself in this evening," Kennedy said.

He is currently incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Where an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.
