Owner: Autopsies Pending in Horse Deaths
Veterinarians are investigating the 'suspicious deaths' of two horses Friday in Nokesville.
The bodies of two horses found in a field early Friday morning at Four Winds Farm in Nokesville are still being autopsied at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, according to the farm owner.
Between 6 and 7 a.m. May 3 a 10-year-old thoroughbred-cross mare was found dead in a field at Julie Mathis' boarding and training facility. A quarter horse palomino gelding was also found in the field; he was severely injured and required euthanasia.
Prince William County Police announced Monday afternoon on their Facebook page the horses' deaths were accidental. But farm owner Julie Mathis told Patch that is premature.

"Someone from the police asked the vets if there was any way this could have been an accident, and the vet said it was possible, but that is not the official ruling," Mathis said. "This is an ongoing investigation," she said.
"My vet and I have spoken with the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, and the official autopsy report has not yet even been submitted," Mathis said.

Mathis also said the animal control officer on the scene Friday did not believe the conditions of the horses bodies was from an accident.
Mathis said she has asked the police to remove the posting from their Facebook page. She also said she would contact Patch with additional information, when it is available.
