Awesome Eats has now turned into Awesome Drinks thanks to Mexico restaurant, where they make the most innovative, delicious cocktails that are guaranteed to de-stress you and refresh you. This is going to be a two-part review with the liquid vacations this week and the cuisine next week. Cocktails anyone?
Getting into the spirit of providing their customers with choices other than beer with their Mexican meals, owner James Macias has been busy in the mixology department like a mad scientist is in a lab. He has become passionate about creating great cocktails using fresh and local ingredients. They squeeze fresh fruits for each drink and are making their own syrups and grenadines. These drinks provide an experience of being on a mini-vacation or a brief respite from the real world in the middle of the afternoon. Everyone can get their drink on because some of these cocktails can be made without spirits.
Let me just say that these lip-smacking concoctions will absolutely turn a non-drinker into a day-drinker, starting with the Latin Lover. James grinned when he said the Latin Lover is popular with the ladies. The Latin Lover is not overly sweet and not overpowering with the taste of alcohol, even though it contains four different liquors; Watermelon, Coconut, and Banana liquor, Peach Shcnapps and pineapple juice mixed together over ice. The drink can sneak up on because if you are thirsty you don't sip it like some cocktails. My advice is not to visit Mexico without having at least one Latin Lover.
Another cooling cocktail on a steamy summer afternoon is the Lime Ade made with Tres Agaves Tequila, Agave nectar and fresh-squeezed limes shaken over ice. This refreshing cooler tastes like a regular old-fashioned lime-ade drink you would find at a family picnic. Mexico restaurant has developed a more sophisticated and trendy margarita drink using Pomegranate juice that is not too tart, and not too sweet by adding Orange Liquor (Grand Galla), Triple Sec and Tequila. It is served with a dusting of salt around the rim to balance the sweet and tart flavors.
If there ever were a way to pass off a healthy fruit smoothie in an alcoholic drink it would have to be Mexico’s frozen Strawberry Margarita. The drink is light and bursting with fresh-picked strawberry flavor. This margarita is not heavy with pureed ice and bottled syrup; this is really more like a smoothie you would find at a smoothie bar. The passion for these creations has been a work in progress for James and the time he has taken to perfect each cocktail shows in each of these drinks.
Mexico has elevated the Pina Colada to a level that even a man would order—it’s that good! This is not that sickening sweet, too thick and sticky drink you remember; this is made with all natural fruit juices, Malibu Rum and Tequila. Mexico's Pina Colada is so refreshing that you can drink several of them, and you will because they go down way too fast.
In the distance I see someone carting in the Gucacmoro, which is fresh, ripe avocados, chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro and limes. Now what goes better with cocktails than an order of fresh guacamole made in front of you with the amounts of ingredients that you request? The answer to that would be fresh tortilla chips, of course!
When you slip on down to get your sip on at Mexico Restaurant located in Southpoint at 9825 Jefferson Davis Highway, tell them that you are there for their Awesome Eats and Drinks as seen in Fredericksburg Patch. Next week, will have Mexico's Awesome Eats.
