Cathy Davis and her husband, Ron, are going to Alaska.
Davis, the chairwoman of the board for the Rappahannock United Way, was one of 40 people across the nation to win the Cabot Community Celebrity award during the Cabot Community Tour 2012 event Saturday at Old Mill Park. As the winner, she got an all-expenses paid trip to Alaska, where she will be going with her husband, Ron, who was by her side to accept the award.
Cabot Creamery Cooperative, best known as makers of "The World’s Best Cheddar,” created the event to recognize local people who make a difference in their communities.
Davis also serves on the board of Empowerhouse (formerly Rappahannock Council on Domestic Violence) and has served on the board of the League of Extraordinary Young Women, an initiative funded by local philanthropist Doris Buffett. When with the League, she mentored high school students and at-risk young women who came from broken homes with the overall goal of helping them get into college. Davis mentored three high school girls, and today all have completed their first year at four-year schools.
As the former president of the Women in the Giving Spirit, she amended the bylaws, helped the group create its first website and established a membership committee. Davis served the community in other ways, including co-chairing several committees for the George Washington Fredericksburg Foundation, participating in the Trees of Hope fundraiser with Hope House and volunteering with Tea for the Cure.
“Investing my time in these agencies is my passion; it’s a full-time job," she said.
