Fredericksburg Shooting Victim Identified
Police released the name of the man who died Friday night.
City of Fredericksburg police released the name of the man who died following a shooting Friday afternoon at Fall Hill Apartments in Fredericksburg. Tyrone Charles Thornton, 42, was pronounced dead about 6:30 p.m., after being transported to Mary Washington Hospital, said Natatia Bledsoe, police department public information officer.
When police responded to reports of a shooting at about 4:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Wicklow Drive, they found a woman from Woodford who reported she had been shot by her ex-boyfriend inside his apartment before he then shot himself.
The woman is 24-years-old, not 22 as originally released. Police believe she had been shot more than once, Bledsoe said. The woman underwent surgery Friday night at Mary Washington Hospital and is still hospitalized in serious condition.
The woman and the man did live together for some period of time, Bledsoe said, before the woman moved out in October 2012. "They had a domestic history, but we still don't know why she was at the apartment on Friday," Bledsoe said.
There was evidence the woman was assaulted in addition to being shot, Bledsoe said. A hand-gun was recovered at the scene.
The woman's two-year-old child was turned over to the woman's father, Bledsoe said.

Fredericksburg General District Court Civil Case records show Thornton's place of residence, Fall Hill Apartments, had filed against him in Dec. 2012 for "Unlawful Detainer" — a lawsuit brought by a landlord to obtain possession of the rented property and receive payment of back rent. The case was scheduled for court Jan. 14.

The investigation is ongoing, Bledsoe said.
