Grammy Winner Shelby Lynne Plays Olde Silk Mill Tonight

Q&A with Lynne about her latest album, Revelation Road, touring, and future plans.

Grammy Award winner Shelby Lynne is on the road with a solo performance tour supporting her self-produced, self-recorded album Revelation Road. She wrote every song and played every instrument on the album (some for the first time), including banjo, mandolin, and various percussive instruments.

Lynne plays tonight in Fredericksburg at downtown, at 7 p.m. with proceeds to benefit ChildHelp.org.

The evening promises to be an enchanting one, with the new room renovations, sound management, and a softly lit brick patio. It is the perfect spring setting for taking in Lynne’s lovely and insightful sounds. There will be beverages, food, and seating available.

Lynne has been singing, writing and performing for over 20 years. Many know her for her album I Am Shelby Lynne, which won the "Best New Artist" Grammy in 2000. Her song, “The Killin’ Kind” was the hit track from British romantic comedy, Bridget Jones Diary. She was Johnny Cash’s mother in Fox film, Walk The Line. Her recent album bares her soul and is honest about her family and her life.

The following is a Q&A with Ms. Lynne.
__________
1.) What was most rewarding about producing, recording, playing every instrument, and writing such a personally expressive album?

It was a challenge in every way, but that's partly why I did it this way. When I put the finished product on my turntable and listened to the vinyl that was a very nice reward.

2.) What revelations have you had performing and touring to support this album? Has it been a healing experience?

Well since I have toured this album solo I found a deeper relationship with the audiences and the songs get to really shine. It has been wonderful.

3.) Have listeners and fans reached out and expressed how this particular album has touched them? How does that affect you?

Yes. Everyone who has heard the album is so sweet and supportive of my work. I am so touched to be surrounded with amazing love every night, everywhere I go.

4.) Does sharing such a personal album leave you feeling exposed? Is that liberating? Is it scary? (It is most definitely inspiring to listeners.)

I feel energized when I perform. My songs are very personal but I love sharing them. It feels good to share and I'm grateful people want to listen.

5.) The album expresses such intricacies of the soul and heart, in subtle yet bold ways. It seems Revelation Road had many elements of life’s journey, self discovery, and healing. Do you feel renewed?

I allow myself to write what my heart tells me to. I know in my soul that people want an honest performance and I am all about honesty. The content may be emotional at times, but for me, necessary.

6.) With a solid, bold self produced solo album out – will you potentially collaborate on the next album? Perhaps record a duet?

It's not in my plans right now, but I really try and not make too many plans.

7.) Do you seek inspiration in other art forms? Any particular works, artists, actors/actresses, or authors you simply love?

I love art of all shapes and forms. I draw, paint, but I love the starving artists’ work always...

When I read, I usually stay with the classics.

8.) Is comfort of discomfort key when you embark on songwriting and the creative process?

I think in order to be true to the song you are inspired by the hand life deals. I write what I know and if its heartaches and pain or memories that have gone by but keep popping up I am moved to write about them.

9.) You have a recording studio in the Palm Desert. Why the Palm Desert?

I have lived in the California desert for 13 years. It's soulful and peaceful.

10.) Can you recollect inspiring environments which take your heart home to rest, be it at home or on the road? Is the Palm Desert one of those places?

It always feels good to be home. It's quiet there.

11.) It is rare for an audience to witness a performance with content and expression as raw, honest, and real as your album. How do you recharge after a performance?

I sleep.
