I can only hope that every time she holds a city meeting the Imperial March starts to play in the background.

Congratulations, Mary Katherine! I will be calling you about my sidewalks and new road on Wicklow! Better put your boots on! We have a lot of work to do in Ward 1 - Fall Hill!

The voter turnout is a sad indication of apathy. I only hope that not only future local elections but state and national electional do not follow suit. How difficult is it to walk down the street and vote?

I'm not sure that the turnout was so awful for a local election. Considering we usually get something like 45% for a presidential general election, over 20% for a local election isn't too bad.
The physical act of voting may not be that difficult, but to cast an informed vote you have to:
- Learn the positions of the candidates
- Learn the differences between the candidates (more difficult in a non-partisan election)
- Learn your own opinion on issues like the courthouse, relations with UMW, Oktoberfest, whatever Matt Paxson's 22 point plan was, Beach Fries, the arts, and anything else that may come up in the election.
- Figure out which candidate best represents those positions.
- Filter all the BS and anticipate city council's reaction to figure out what candidates will actually be able to do.
This isn't easy - I read the Patch fairly regularly and honestly I would have had a hard time voting (I live in Spotsylvania, so I didn't have to). It's not easy. That's not to say people shouldn't do it, but in a city with huge unemployment issues and even bigger underemployment issues it's too much to ask of many people. That's why they don't vote.

She deserved the vote she got because she has invested her whole life here in this city. How many of us can say that? I'm very proud of Mary Katherine and very excited for the future of Fredericksburg.

If she invested her whole life here in this city, then she should know what is priority and that is the residents, not spending money, but overseeing the money and spending it wisely, ie., updating our sewers, roads, and businesses. So far, I haven't seen that with MKGreenlaw.

Let's give our new Mayor-Elect an opportunity to celebrate. She fought hard and earned a landslide majority vote, regardless of the percentage or number of those who actually showed up. This is a credit to Mrs. Greenlaw and her campaign, and she deserves our respect and support. I encourage all who voted for one of the other two candidates to rally behind our new Mayor now and to do what you can to help her succeed. Congratulations Mayor-Elect Greenlaw.

Wait! The election was held and I missed it? If the election had gotten as much publicity as the Oktoberfest "Brew-Ha-Ha", a better turnout might have happened.

Barbara, you apparently are new to Fredericksburg Patch. I covered this election like it's never been done in this city before. I went to every event, every meeting, wrote story after story after story. As for Oktoberfest, I wrote 2 stories on it, maybe 3. Fredericksburg Patch had a Fredericksburg Elections 2012 page that included profiles, Q&As and much more. The FLS had videos and profiles. There was PLENTY of election coverage if anyone wanted to take it seriously and get involved.
