Man Charged With Intimidating City Detectives

Police say the suspect followed detectives outside of the courthouse and made threatening gestures at them.

A local man was charged with assault of a police officer and obstruction of justice after a bizarre court hearing that involved his son.

David Loveless, 58, of Fredericksburg, is accused of following detectives out onto the street outside the city courthouse and staring at them as they got into their cruisers to leave. Fredericksburg Police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said Loveless also was heard making a statement about future reprisals against the detectives for their testimony against his son and for allegedly making shooting gestures toward them.

The preliminary hearing Tuesday was for his son, James Loveless, on several charges, including a burglary charge from 2010 at Greenbrier Apartments, where someone entered an apartment through a window and stole electronic equipment.  In February, the police department served a search warrant on Loveless’s home on Virginia Ave related to the burglary case, and Bledsoe said that during service of the search warrant, James Loveless was subsequently charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

"He attempted to run from the scene and during his detention he struggled with officers," she said.

Bledsoe said David Loveless was present during the testimony. A magistrate issued felony warrants for David Loveless on two counts of assault by intimidation and two counts of obstruction of justice for intimidating witnesses.
