Police Seize Sawed-off Rifle After Fight

Fredericksburg officers searched the suspect's apartment and seized five other firearms.

Fredericksburg Police seized a sawed-off rifle Sunday morning from a suspect accused of being involved in a fight earlier Sunday morning in the 2300 block of Cowan Boulevard.

At 2 a.m., officers responded to the area for a report of a fight between two men in the parking lot with one of the suspects allegedly armed. Natatia Bledsoe, police spokeswoman, said that the alleged armed suspect was gone when police arrived, but he returned to the scene on foot shortly afterwards. Francis C. Despanie, 29, of Fredericksburg, was arrested for public intoxication, brandishing a firearm and illegal possession of a sawed-off rifle.

"During a search of the suspect’s apartment, five firearms and related items were confiscated for safekeeping," Bledsoe said.

Despanie was incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

In a separate incident two days earlier at 9:20 p.m. on Friday a resident told police that while he was walking home he was assaulted by two men in the 300 block of Brock Square. The assailants stole his wallet and cell phone and one of the suspects hit the 33-year-old victim in the face with a handgun. The victim was transported by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital for a large cut above his eye.

The suspects were both described as both black males in their mid-20s. One suspect was wearing a white T-shirt or tank top with jeans and the second was wearing a white T-shirt or tank top with black pants. The second suspect was also wearing a blue and red baseball cap and he was the one armed with the handgun.
