Two Children Hit by Vehicle In Mayfield

Police said the injuries are not life threatening, but the two boys were transported to Mary Washington Hospital.

A 15-year-old boy and his 4-year-old brother were struck by a vehicle while they were riding a bike together in the Mayfield neighborhood at about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, said Fredericksburg Police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe.

The incident happened at the corner of McKinney Street and Howison Avenue.

Bledsoe said the boys reportedly rode into the path of a car making a turn at the intersection.

"The vehicle was operated by a male resident of Mayfield and it is estimated he was traveling at about 10 miles per hour when the accident occurred," she said. "The driver remained at the scene and provided assistance to the children."

Bledsoe said the injuries to the two boys were not life threatening and they were transported to Mary Washington Hospital.

"Both suffered abrasions and bruising from the impact with the pavement, and the younger child had a facial injury believed to be caused when the car's mirror struck him, but both are expected to make a full recovery," she said. "Neither of the victims lost consciousness."

The driver will not be charged in this incident, Bledsoe said.
