U.S. News & World Report Ranks Mary Washington Hospital No. 6

The ranking put the Fredericksburg hospital in the top 25 percent nationally.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Mary Washington Hospital as one of the state's best hospitals in its 23rd annual edition of the rankings that reviewed 720 of the nation's approximately 5,000 hospitals.

The magazine's "Best Hospitals" rankings marked the Fredericksburg hospital as one of the best in eight "high-performing” specialties: gastroenterology, geriatrics, ear, nose and throat, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. The hospital was ranked No. 6 in the state out of 125 hospitals.

Mary Washington Hospital’s performance puts it in the top 25 percent nationally as well as above most other Washington, D.C. area hospitals that are
not nationally ranked, according to a press release from the hospital.

Last month, the nonprofit Leapfrog Group gave Mary Washington Hospital an "A" grade for its hospital safety and sister hospital Stafford Hospital got a "B" grade.

Stafford Hospital and the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center were not ranked in the U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals" report.

“We are very proud of the outstanding quality of care provided to our patients at Mary Washington Hospital,” said Kevin Van Renan, senior vice president and MWH administrator. “Our U.S. News No. 6 ranking within the Commonwealth of Virginia confirms that our exceptionally skilled team of medical professionals and support staff are providing the best care for our community.”

John F. Fick III, chairman of the board of trustees for the hospital's parent company Mary Washington Healthcare, said the high ranking is great news for the community and a testament to the quality services the hospital provides.

U.S. News & World Report Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow said the "Best Hospitals" report can help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges.

“All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” Comarow said. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”

Mary Washington has come up since Dr John Armitage opened up the heart center and put the hospital on the map. They have some outstanding doctors in the Fredericksburg area. Certainly in ENT and Orthopedics. Dr Massey and Dr Larsen. I was a patient in MWH and have to tell you they still have some sour pusses on the staff and they need to fix that. I was deathly ill and was brought by ambulance and don't remember much. But I do remember falling and the nurse not helping me get up. I also remember being yelled at by the fat boy in Catscan. Being told not to touch him. I told MWH and you know they never even called to ask me about this incident. That tells me a lot and makes me not want to go back there. What does matter though is how others are treated. Elizabeth ( young black CNA on the 3rd floor) was the best person in the hospital. Kudos to her and God bless.......

Due to an aggressive health condition I am constantly either being taken care of in Mary Washington Hospital s E.R. or admitted to their care. Thay have always been so kind & considerate while treating me. I'm addressed by my name & not my illness. The ppl. who work in MWH are very careing and sincerely try their best to make your stay there as pleasant as can be! We have other hospitals in the area but after going to them I have found that MWH was able to serve my needs more completely & in a timely manner. So I have to give the utmost gratatude & respect to the nurses & doctors for taking great care of me. Thank you MWH!! You have truely earned this rating!!

Dan,
Why not tell us the entire truth? What about the "other article" in today's FLS where MWH ranked near the bottom?
