U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman Remembers Hero Michael Murphy

U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman said this is the greatest nation the world has ever known.

During Monday's Memorial Day ceremony at the Our Fallen Heroes monument in downtown Fredericksburg, U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman told a story of a Navy Seal lieutenant in Afghanistan who died to protect his unit from enemy fire.

Wittman said Navy Seal Lt. Michael Murphy was in a rugged part of Afghanistan in 2005 when he came across enemy Taliban fire. Murphy died on June 28, 2005, because he left his spot to get to a clearer area so that he could communicate back to headquarters. Before he died, he successfully communicated back to headquarters his unit's location and then returned to fire back at the enemies.

"Folks we are the greatest nation the world has ever known and we are the greatest nation the world has ever known for one single reason: because we have the greatest military the world has ever known, and that is for one single reason: because we have the greatest men and women who have served and do serve this nation today," he said. "We are honored and blessed for that."
