In one of the closest games of the season, the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team held off a late comeback attempt from their division foe York College to remain undefeated with a 54-48 victory Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania. The Eagles are now 23-0, one of four undefeated teams in Division III.
The Lady Eagles were ahead the entire game and had a lead of as high as 11 points but York College cut the deficit to just four points at halftime, 25-21.
At the 4-minute mark in the second half, neither team was able to score for more than two minutes until a layup and free-throw shot by York's Brittany Hicks made the score 43-49 in UMW's favor. UMW missed several scoring opportunities to put the game away but York was unable to capitalize.
UMW's regular season finale is 6 p.m. Wednesday against Stevenson University. The women's team is enjoying their highest ranking in three years, at No. 8 in the D3hoops.com poll and No. 7 in the USA Today/ESPN National Coaches Poll.
