For the second year in a row, the University of Mary Washington is the only institution in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia to be named as a "best buy" in the prestigious Fiske Guide to Colleges.

Mary Washington is among 49 public and private institutions that have been designated as a “best buy,” delivering the best education and most reasonable prices. The selective guidebook features more than 300 colleges and universities. The listing was based on questionnaires sent to administrators and a cross-section of students.

UMW is among 24 public and 25 private schools singled out as “best buys” in the 2012 edition of the guide.

“Mary Washington could easily be mistaken for one of Virginia’s elite private colleges. It offers just as much history and tradition – for a much lower price,” according to the Fiske Guide, which has been compiled annually for more than 25 years under the direction of Edward B. Fiske, former education editor of the New York Times.

The university “has gained a reputation as one of the premium public liberal arts colleges in the country and continues to attract bright students from around the globe,” the Fiske Guide states. “‘Mary Washington has a close-knit community,’ says a junior, ‘and it’s a place where students can really thrive.’”

In February, the Peace Corps ranked Mary Washington as the top small university for alumni now serving in the Peace Corps. The university also has received national recognition in other selective guidebooks, including the Princeton Review, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, U.S. News & World Report, Peterson’s Competitive Colleges, Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges and Forbes online magazine.
