UMW to Induct 5 into Athletic Hall of Fame

The University of Mary Washington Athletic Hall of Fame will induct five members as its 16th class on Friday, October 21, 2011. The class includes long-time men's soccer and men's tennis coach Roy Gordon, six-time track and field All-American Yurissa Mitchell '00, three-time tennis All-American Lea Schon '01, two-sport All-American Stefanie Teter '96, and baseball All-American Jin Wong '97. 

Gordon, who recently retired from the University after 34 years, is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA soccer history, winning 432 games. The first coach in men's soccer and men's tennis history at the University, he was an eight-time CAC Coach of the Year in soccer, won the NSCAA regional coach of the year award five times, and led UMW to nine NCAA Division III Tournaments during his tenure. He also led the men's tennis team to five CAC Championships and led the team to its first NCAA Tournament, in 1997.

Mitchell gained six All-America honors in indoor and outdoor track and field, finishing as high as second in the nation twice in the triple jump. She gained All-America status in both indoor and outdoor track in her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons, and still holds the school record in the triple jump and as a member of the 400 meter relay. She placed runner up in the triple jump twice at NCAA Championships, and took third once, fifth, sixth, and eight once, making her one of the most decorated athletes in school history with six All-America performances.

Schon was the most decorated women's tennis player in program history, gaining All-America honors three years and holds the distinction of being the only four-time Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year in any sport. She appeared in four NCAA individual singles tournaments, and is the only UMW player to ever advance to the finals of the ITA Small College National Championships. A four-year #1 singles and doubles player, she ranks in the top five in school history with 70 career singles wins and 56 career doubles wins.

Teter was one of the most versatile athletes in school history, gaining All-America status in both soccer and basketball. In soccer, she was a three-time CAC Player of the Year and second team All-American in 1994 and ranks in the top ten all-time in scoring in program history with 101 career points on 34 goals and 33 assists. In basketball, she was a two-time All-CAC selection and gained honorable mention All-America honors in 1996. At the time of her graduation, she held four season and career records, and scored 1,017 points in her basketball career, becoming one of just three players at the time in Division III history to surpass both 1,000 career points and 600 assists. She led the nation in assists her senior season.

Wong became just the second baseball All-American in UMW program history in 1996 after stealing a school-record 37 bases and hitting .425. He holds the school record with six stolen bases in one game and still holds the career stolen base record with 71. For his career, Wong posted a .378 average with 102 hits, 91 runs scored, and 52 RBI, and helped the Eagles to the 1997 NCAA Division III baseball tournament. Following graduation, he has in 10 years become a key figure in the resurgence of the Kansas City Royals, as he is currently the Director of Baseball Administration after serving as Manager of Scouting Operations and Director of Baseball Operations.
