VIDEO: UMW and Germanna Sign Historic Agreement

The co-enrollment agreement allows an eligible GCC student to take up to five courses at the four-year university that will transfer back to his or her associate degree.

President Richard V. Hurley and President David A. Sam today signed a historic agreement in Dodd Auditorium that will allow eligible community college students to co-enroll at the four-year university for transferable credits to an associate degree.

Sam said the historic and innovative agreement takes the ongoing partnership between UMW and GCC to a new level. Sam said the idea for these programs came up during a lunch meeting the two presidents had at La Petite Auberge in downtown Fredericksburg.

"Since President Hurley began his tenure, he and I have had regular and productive meetings on how, together, we can better serve our students, communities and the Commonwealth," Sam said. "This agreement is one fruit of the trusting relationship he and I have developed."

The co-enrollment agreement allows eligible GCC students to take up to five courses at UMW that will transfer back to their associate degree. Co-enrolled students can then gain admission to UMW after earning their associate degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.25.

The two presidents also signed a direct transfer agreement that allows eligible GCC students to transfer to UMW's bachelor of liberal arts degree program which is designed for adults who graduated from high school six or more years ago or who are veterans and active-duty members of the armed forces. The GCC students seeking a direct transfer must have earned an associate degree with a minimum grade point average of 2.75 to be guaranteed admission, not to exceed 63 credits.
