Virginians Unhappy with Presidential Election Start Secession Petition
Virginia joins Texas, other states in creating a petition to secede from the United States.
In a move that seems to take the idea of red states and blue states one step further, residents unhappy with the results of the presidential election last week are signing petitions to secede from the union.
As of Wednesday evening, more than 6,500 Virginians were behind a petition (created on Sunday) to secede. The petition is located on the White House Web site.
If seceding from the union sounds like something that happened during the Civil War era, you're correct: Virginia seceded from the union April 17, 1861, after the Nov. 6, 1860 election of another president, Abraham Lincoln.
Virginia isn't alone. Residents in at least 30 states have started petitions to secede or break away from the United States. Texas, Louisiana and Florida have apparently gained the most signatures. The petitions reportedly need at least 25,000 signatures before they will be recognized by the president. Texas and Louisiana reportedly have more than that. No word from the White House.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry, an early GOP candidate for president, weighed in on the controversy Tuesday. "Gov. [Rick] Perry believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it," his press secretary Catherine Frazier wrote in a statement to the Dallas Morning News. "But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government."
The Virginia petition reads:
WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Peacefully grant the State of Virginia to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.
As the founding fathers of the United States of America made clear in the Declaration of Independence in 1776:
"When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."
"...Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government..."

You are missing the point. The key phrase from The Declaration of Independence is: "...Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government..."
Consider what Obama is doing to medical care. You like seeing your own doctor? eventually, and this was buried in a bail-out bill, you won't be able to. You'll have to talk to a computer or a nurse who will then filter the info back to a doctor who may or may not be allowed to treat you.
And how about the "witch hunts' that seem to be going on in the military? There goes our defense.
And how about the fact that most of us have a lower quality of life now than 4 years ago?
How about the fact that Obama backs allowing a conglomeration of FOREIGN countries, aka the UN, dictate the right of US Citizens to bear arms for our own defense?
Get real. Any set of states that does secede will form an alliance or commonwealth. After all it has worked for England.
Study history. And not that which the news media hands out. It's often warped.

The election in 2000 didn't exactly mke me jump for joy. Gore won the popular vote. Bush won 271 electoral votes. The result? 9/11, two wars, and a recession. Idon't know how anyone could say that was a great 8 years. The ACA is long overdue. Romney loved it in Massachusetts and would have embraced it for the whole country had he not thrown in his lot with the far-right. These myths you present as fact may play with your fellow righties, but a whole of us are very thankful we finally have national helth care. If you don't understand the role of the UN, please research it. I would rather see war averted if at all possible, and the UN serves a huge role there. As for "witch hunts" in the military? Clinton was crucified for having an affair. Why shouldn't the same standard apply to everybody else, including the military? I don't think our defense is going to hell because people are being held accountable for their actions. I have lived in Virginia for over 35 years, and I certainly will do everything possible to ensure we don't secede. And I know a lot of people feel as I do. This is serious stuff here, not a child's game. Just because you don't like how the game turned out, you can't take your ball and go home.

Secessionists need to do a little more research into how the United States government works before they claim that they have the right to do it. Justice Antonin Scalia, who claims he only interprets the law as founding fathers would have, said that "If there was any Constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede."

President Obama carried Virginia in the election--like it or not. Sounds like a few thousand sore winners want to secede and they are welcome to secede their citizenship and good luck living in Europe with the euro. All Virginians do not agree with the minority viewpoint!

I cannot believe that anyone that lives in Virginia where so many battles of the Civil War were fought and so many deaths occurred on both sides would stoop so low as to sign a secession anything. This shows idiocy on the cause of the Civil War and the result. Guess what? The South lost and states cannot secede. People may be unhappy with the election results, but they are proving themselves stupid. Just add up all the deaths in that war. Total dead and wounded over 775,000.

First, why is it you folks (all of you, not just the secessionists) are so bad off you need a god and a government to show you how to run/lead your lives to begin with?
Second, the elections have nothing to do with this. The country has been in the sh****r for decades now. People are tired of this c**p, and have wanted this change for a long time now.
Third, weve elected 40-some presidents, and IT HAS NEVER gotten better! Stop electing problems, and the problems will go away!
Fourth, i can state emphatically, that if Va seceeds, with the current child molesters we have in state office now, what makes you folks think the new mgmt will be better? Va has no clue on how to run anything but itself into the ground. case in point... the history of Va!
Fifth, i told you all so. been telling you for years. so im wondering is the problem really the losers we have elected, or the losers doing the electing.... for not waking up!!

Most states should have seceded from the Union when Pres. G.W. Bush stole the election for his second term. He started two wars, Iraq was unnecessary and built on a lie. Bailed out the Banks, sunk the economy and no states complained about seceding from the Union, I wonder why ? Now, in a fair and honest election, one in which the President was elected with a majority of votes and 332 electoral votes, States want to secede, I wonder why ?? When you look at our reality, nothing has changed. We still have our freedom, our guns and all. Get Over it !!

To anyone that wants to secede I have a suggestion. Go to Mexico, give up your citizenship and when you have had enough, sneak back over the border. I wouldn't suggest going to Arizona at that point. All of this makes for interesting discussion but is so irrevalent. We need to go Forward.

Did not vote for either Bush. Did not vote for Obama either time. All we can do at this point is keep our faith that God will help us get through the next 4 years and the next President will be able to straighten out the mess that Obama has made.
My question to all that are so angry NOW and want to secede NOW, where was your outrage, your voice, and your petitions BEFORE the election? Why did all of you ALLOW Obama to get re-elected? You can bet that his supporters were busing folks in to vote, just like they did the first time. You can also bet that there was voter fraud going on, just like it was the first time. (This was proven, people were fired.)
Maybe NOW enough folks will speak up and instead of trying to destroy this country, impeach Obama . I believe he had a plan from the beginning, embaress the United States whenever possible, get us in debt as far as possible, and destroy the United States by getting us all to fight each other. He has done a great job so far!!! And it looks like by the end of the next 4 years he will finish us off!!

Where was your outrage in 2000 when Bush lost the popular vote by 500,000 votes and squeaked into the White House with 271 electoral votes? I'm sick of the continued demonization of Obama. Lot o other people, we view the ACA as a godsend. Look at Massachusetts. It works there, and Romney considers it his greatest legacy. It will work, and all these scare tactics about how it will ruin the country are outrageous. You will be able to see your own doctors. I'm tired of all the lies and fear-mongoring. To sign a petition to secede from this country because you don't like how an election turned out is the most unpatriotic thing I can imagine. Bush started two wars and drove up the deficit. Where is your outrage about that? Obama wasn't "allowed" to be reelected. This is a democracy. The majority voted for him. There was voter suppression, all right, and I saw it myself right here in Virginia. And it wasn't coming from Obama's campaign.

I think most everyone who has commented on this page and any other I have read has tunnel vision. They really think that this is all about obama winning a second term. That may be some peoples reasoning but it's just a small fraction of the issue. The bigger picture is that WE THE PEOPLE have reached our breaking point and want the change this country so badly needs nothing more. People are right this isn't a child's game and I can agree with that but to all those who leave snide remarks and think this whole thing is a joke, well it's no laughing matter either. This was bound to happen eventually if we stayed on the road we've been on and I think America has just finally reached the end of it and what we are willing to take. If the states secede then that's what happens if they don't ok too but one way or the other it sends out a pretty strong message that we want our rights left alone and change is a must.

if you want change - you have to get a majority of the country to agree with you.
the majority who did vote - voted for the change they supported - and did not agree with the change you wanted.
you know - if you took a vote of all voters on seceding - you boys would lose 1000 to one or worse. In order to secede you need a majority vote.
that's the way the forefathers designed the Constitution.

You are discounting those of us who voted for Obama and believe strongly our rights, especially those of women, are in serious jeopardy of being severely restricted by radicals on the right. George W. Bush lost the popular vote in 2000 and won the White House with 271 electoral votes. If a full recount had bern done in Florida, Gore would have won that election. In 2004, Kerry was leading by a wide margin in Ohio until the computer tabulating votes mysteriously crashed. Lo and behold, when the computer came back on line, Bush led by a wide margin. Karl Rove engineered the theft of that election. Why was Rove so sure Ohio would go to Romney? He tried the same hocus pocus with the computer. This time, though, when the computer crashed one minute later than it had in 2004, hackers had discovered what he was trying to do and frustrated his efforts. So, since the will of the people was not subverted this time out, you think it's unfair? This is a democracy. We vote and move on. God knows, Democrats have had to swallow hard in 2000 and 2004, had to watch Clinton be hounded every day of his Presidency and have had to endure the demonization of Obama. Sounds like you'd be happier in a dictatorship or maybe a monarchy. But, please do not pretend you speak for the majority of Americans or that you love this country.
