The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center is pleased to announce the opening of Picturing the Civil War, a new sesquicentennial exhibition that looks at visual arts depictions of the Civil War in Fredericksburg. The exhibition will debut several pieces from the Museum’s collection, and will explore the how the visual arts served both commercial and emotional purposes following the conflict.

Christopher Uebelhor, Director of Collections and Exhibitions, commented, “This exhibition will display a number of photographs and artworks that are far from the usual depictions of empty battlefields and the ruined city. Often moving and sometimes bizarre, these pieces will illustrate the various ways in which photographers—whose genre had only recently come of age—and artists documented the war and its aftermath.”

Picturing the Civil War opens on August 27 and runs through December 31. It is funded through a generous grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
