Deanna Hamn, a Fredericksburg single mother of three, received a car through the collaboration of Vehicles for Change, Melendez Motors and Telemedia Broadcasting, according to a press release from Vehicles for Change.
Melendez Motors donated the car, a 2000 Ford Windstar Van, and nominations for deserving families were solicited from the community through Thunder 104.5, a station associated with Telemedia Broadcasting.
Vehicles for Change reviewed the entries to ensure they matched the program’s qualifications. As a final part of the contest, Thunder 104.5 listeners voted on one of two finalists to pick the winning family.
Hamn was awarded the car in a ceremony at Melendez Motors.
Vehicles for Change seeks to improve transportation for disadvantaged families, giving them access to better jobs. Since 1999 the nonprofit organization has awarded more than 4,000 refurbished cars to low-income residents in Maryland, Virginia and Washington.
