Traffic Shift on Route 1 Bridge in Stafford

Stay alert for a new traffic pattern, lane markings at Aquia Creek crossing.

Route 1 traffic will be gradually shifted into temporary travel lanes at the Aquia Creek bridge crossing in Stafford County beginning Friday, Nov. 8, continuing through the weekend.  Construction of a new bridge is underway.

One northbound lane of Route 1 will be closed at the bridge between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8.

Northbound motorists will be guided by signs and lane markings to shift slightly east onto a temporary two-lane bridge.

One southbound lane of Route 1 will be closed between 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 and noon on Saturday, Nov. 9. Southbound traffic will be guided to shift slightly east to travel in the existing northbound lanes of Route 1.

This temporary traffic pattern will remain in place until summer 2014.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractor, Corman Construction, Inc., are replacing an 88-year-old Route 1 over Aquia Creek to improve the infrastructure on this primary road.

The $5.5 million bridge project began in December 2012, and will conclude in August 2015.

The project is being carried out in stages to allow four travel lanes of Route 1 to remain open.
