Fredericksburg Arts Commission Gets Website

The Fredericksburg Arts Commission's new website promotes the arts.

The Fredericksburg Arts Commission now has its own website that will be used to promote local arts and cultural events.

The website promotes local art galleries and local businesses that host artists' work and bands, while also having details about the commission, its bylaws, meeting minutes, strategic plan and maps of the arts and cultural district.

"We are proud of our new website and are confident that it will help us serve the community for many years to come," said Kevin Bartram, chairman of the Fredericksburg Arts Commission and director of the University of Mary Washington Philharmonic.

The city put the website work out to bid and almost two-dozen companies submitted offers. The city requires any work that's above $1,000 must go through the procurement procedures and get at least three competitive offers, said Karen Hedelt, the city director of economic development and tourism.

Patrick McCarthy of Evolv Designs out of Norfolk won the project at a cost of $4,770 paid with a grant from the Economic Development Authority. The commission will pay $1,700 over the next three years for hosting and maintaining the website.

The following companies bid on the website project:

22nd Century Technologies, Inc.
Abacus Management Services
Brio Solutions
Civic Resource Group
Command Solutions
Crystal Multi-Media
Desio Studios
Evolv-Design
FusionSpan
InCommand Technologies

Why couldn't the Arts Commission just have had a page on the city's website? Regardless, this is a slap in the face to local artists who submitted bids. The city is NOT required to accept the lowest bid just for the sake of accepting the lowest bid. So much for buying local. And why is the city paying over $500 a year to host the site? Is the server on Mars? That's an almost criminally unnecessary amount in and of itself.

I wouldn't want that, Tom. The city's website is hard enough to navigate and it's messy and antiquated. Doubtful to improve considering council killed the PIO job apparently because of an inflated salary range.

Seth Casana is on the Arts Commission and he's a computer whiz...what's he think about the cost of the serving and maintenance?

Good point Dan. I only put that out there because most artists and local arts organizations have their own websites, and a separate one is really just redundant and not needed. An Arts Commission website, in reality, is not going to provide all that much in terms of promoting the arts either; it's really a distraction from more worthy initiatives the commission should be taking. When you Google Fredericksburg, you're going to be pointed to the city website, not the Arts Commission website; and if you specifically search for the arts in Fredericksburg online, you're going to be directed to the LibertyTown site, the Art First site, the FCCA site, etc. (really, try it). The Fredericksburg arts are well covered on the Internets Dan. This money would have been better spent investing in local talent (something to which the Fredericksburg Arts Commission proves time and time again it is ironically averse). The Arts Commission's consistent non-Fredericksburg priority is what led to the formation of Art Attack Fredericksburg, which has a Facebook page created by a Fredericksburg artist.

Not only did the city choose to pay folks from outside the community ( as per usual), but just as important...the new website is a mess and is a poor example of what it COULD have been. It also contains plenty of outdated information. Once again, our leaders ignore us while telling us what a great job that they are doing for us. So frustrating...
