Weekend Events in the Fredericksburg Area April 12 - 14, 2013

Lions Charity Bingo 

  •  When: Friday, April 12, 6:45 p.m.
  •  Where: Falmouth Volunteer Fire Station
  •  Why Go: Enjoy games of Bingo, with all proceeds going toward the Lions Club for community service projects.
  •  Price: $6

The Tempest”

  • When: Friday, April 12, 8 - 10 p.m., Saturday, April 13, 8 - 10 p.m., and Sunday, April 14, 2 p.m.
  • Where: University of Mary Washington, Klein Theatre
  • Why Go: Students will perform this classic Shakespeare play, with a post-performance discussion on April 14th. 
  • Price: $18, general; $16, students and senior citizens; $8, UMW students, faculty and staff

Stafford Hospital 5K Run/Walk

Railroad Museum and Train Rides 

  •  When: Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  •  WhereRailway Workers Museum
  •  Why Go: Tour railroad cars, sit in the caboose and weather permitting take a ride down county tracks in a restored crew car. 
  •  Price: FREE, donations accepted 

Fredericksburg Off-Road Duathlon

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m.
  • Where: 3219 Fall Hill Ave
  • Why Go: A Virginia off-road series race, with friendly competition. Food will be provided, as well as drinks from Blue & Gray Brewery post-race. 
  • Price: $35, registration required

Birding at Stratford: Mate Choice and Sexual Selection

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Where: Stratford Hall, duPont Library
  • Why Go: This birding program will be led by Dr. Andrew Dolby. 
  • Price: $10

11th Annual Festival of Poetry

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Where: Salem Church Library 
  • Why Go: Hear poetry from others in the area in an open mike reading, as well as a reading from Michael McCarthy, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English, Linguistics and Communication at the University of Mary Washington. 
  • Price: FREE

Fredericksburg Food Swap

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m.
  • Where: Hurkamp Park
  • Why Go: The Fredericksburg Food Swappers encourage all to come out and swap food. This includes bakers, canners, picklers, distillers, home cooks, and everyone who loves to make food. Swap homemade items with others.
  • Price: FREE

Family Fun Fest

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Where: Spotsylvania Towne Centre
  • Why Go: Meet Keegan Allen from the TV show, Pretty Little Liars, bring your little one to participate in the annual Diaper Derby, Busch Garden’s Animal Ambassadors will be onsite, plus vendors, demonstrations, and more.

23rd Annual Multicultural Fair

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Where: University of Mary Washington
  • Why Go: Experience multicultural music and entertainment, international food, ethnic craft vendors, children activities and more.
  • Price: FREE

Cash in the Attic Appraisal Fair

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Where: Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center
  • Why Go: Appraisers will be on hand to appraise personal objects, antiques, and family heirlooms. Tim Luke from HGTV’s Cash in the Attic will be onsite. 
  • Price: $20 per item; $50 for 3 items

Bricks and Boards in the ‘Burg: Downtown Walking Tour

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 10 - 11:15 a.m.
  • Where: Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center - Market Square
  • Why Go: Learn about the history and architecture of Fredericksburg from four different centuries. Tours will highlight the Rappahannock River, the spire and steeples of Princess Anne Street, Town Hall, Market House, and Market Square. 
  • Price: $5, adults; $2, children and students. Museum members free.

9-1-1 Open House

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Where: Public Safety Center
  • Why Go: Visit Stafford County’s 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center and learn how 9-1-1 works. 
  • Price: FREE

PAWS for Reading

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 1:30 - 3 p.m. (Salem Church)
  • Where: Salem Church Branch Library 
  • Why Go: Kids in grades K-6 can practice their reading with therapy dogs, trained to be avid listeners. 
  • Price: FREE, sign up required

Community Artist Series: Johnny Johnson 

  •  When: Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, 12 - 5 p.m.
  •  Where: Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center, Catherine W. Jones McKann Center, Mansard Gallery
  •  Why Go: View an exhibit of past and present social issues, from local artist Johnny Johnson.

Earth Day on the Rappahannock 

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Where: Old Mill Park 
  • Why Go: Learn how you can reduce your impact on the environment. Exhibitions, activities, animals, food, music, nature hikes and more.

Chemistry “Magic” Show

University of Mary Washington Jazz Festival

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 2 - 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 14, 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Where: University of Mary Washington
  • Why Go: A festival of music with classes and performances by some of the best in Jazz music. Events include a Master Class Clinic with Guitarist Pete Fields, Peter Fields Worldjam Group, Master Class Clinic with Rick Whitehead, UMW Jazz Ensemble featuring Rick Whitehead, Rick Whitehead Trio, and the U.S. Air Force Premier Jazz Ensemble, the Airmen of Note. YMCA Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Spring Fling Dance 

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 7 - 9 p.m.
  • Where: Massad YMCA
  • Why Go: Enjoy an evening with your child with dancing, games and refreshments. All proceeds go to the Jay Massad Support Campaign, which helps deserving families in our community. 
  • Price: $35 per couple; $5 for each additional person

Swing Dance

  • When: Saturday, April 13, 7:30 – 11 p.m.
  • Where: Picker’s Supply Concert Hall
  • Why Go: Learn how to swing with a beginner’s lesson from 7:30 – 8 p.m., and then join in the dancing from 8 – 11 p.m.
