Awesome Eats @ Family Diner

Awesome Eats hits Family Diner to taste their best food.

Roll me over and call me stuffed! This joint is a force to be reckoned with and the list is long and the food is filling. This is one of those rare finds in the restaurant industry and totally diet-breaking worthy. I don’t know where to start, so I will begin with the end.

Go for the cream-cheese stuffed French toast topped with strawberries and dusted with powdered sugar. I believe this is a ‘two-fer’ breakfast and dessert all rolled into one.

Go for the Awesome Steak and Cheese made with shaved beef, cheese, onions and green peppers that are over-stuffed and falling out of the soft sub roll. If you can eat all of it and have room for dessert I think they should put your picture on a "wall-of-shame."

Try the hand-cut potato fries that are super soft on the inside, and browned on the outside. They don’t need ketchup, but if you want it they have industrial- sized squeeze bottles on the table (who doesn’t hate those small glass bottles). I am told that they go through 600 pounds of whole potatoes a week! That is a "spud-tacular" amount of ‘taters and a true testament on just how good they are.

Go for the Crab Cake that is a generous 4 1/5 ounce sauteed Jumbo Lump no filler patty. Just squeeze lemon on it because you don’t want anything to detract from the flavor of the crab. Go for the heaping pile of fresh Pulled Pork BBQ that is smoked on premise.  It is topped with homemade coleslaw and served with hand-battered onion rings.

Go for the Fredericksburger, a Surf-n Turf on a Kaiser Roll specialty. It is a hand-formed fresh beef burger topped with large shrimp, melted cheese and hot sauce.

Owner Glen Adcock, aka "Monk," uses tried and true recipes from his Grandma’ and passed down to his mom Jan Shilling.  Jan can be found in the diner everyday as she helps Glen make sure their guests are well taken care of, happy and full. They open at 6 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday, but serve breakfast all day including country favorites like Salt Fish, Scrapple, Grits, Home Fried Potatoes, Sausage Gravy and Chipped Beef Gravy.  Steve Walacavicz is the head chef and came on board when they opened at 2100 Princess Anne St. after moving from Rt. 2 and 17.

Customer William Simulcik said, “My wife and I come often because their food is consistently good, the portions are great and the service is fantastic. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and their pies and cakes are made in-house.”

The menu is a Foodie’s paradise. Ordering is based on what your inner cravings are screaming at you when reading the menu which is extensive and the items I have mentioned barely scratch the surface. The 50’s theme is complete with a Car Hop and Elvis night, and that, too, is reason enough to visit the Family Diner.

When you go, tell them you’ve come for their ‘wesome Eats by Fredericksburg Patch.  Family Diner is located at 2100 Princess Anne St.
