Battle of Fredericksburg? There's an App for That

Battle App from the Civil War Trust lets users explore history while on the move.

Now, with a swipe of the finger, visitors to Fredericksburg will be able to turn to their iPhones to get detailed information on the events of the battle and how those events relate to their surroundings.

The app is part of the Civil War Trust's Battle Apps and developed by NeoTreks with the support of the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Battle of Fredericksburg is the second battle to go mobile, following apps created for the actions during the Battle of Gettysburg at Devil's Den and Little Roundtop.

The app allows users to interact with virtual signs which connect the user with historic information based on GPS coordinates. Users can watch videos and examine battle maps not just for the areas of the battlefield within the proper Fredericksburg National Battlefield boundaries, but also significant sites located throughout downtown Fredericksburg where the battle raged in its early stages.

Tomorrow, at 10 a.m. on May 4, the app will be unveiled in a press conference at the Courtyard Marriot featuring officials from the Civil War Trust. They will be joined by Del. Bill Howell, Fredericksburg Director of Economic Development and Tourism Karen Hedelt, and Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton.
