City's Emergency Operations Center to Open at 7 a.m.

Natatia L. Bledsoe, Public Information Officer with the Fredericksburg Police Department, released an update on the City's storm preparations on Sunday afternoon.  The complete text follows:

"The City of Fredericksburg is monitoring the weather predictions and preparing for Hurricane Sandy as the storm approaches the coast.  The Emergency Operations Center in Fredericksburg will be open and staffed by 7 a.m. on Monday morning in order to manage the City's response to the damage that is anticipated from the high winds and heavy rain.  

"The leading edge of the storm should reach our area by Sunday night, and the worst of the weather is expected to be felt from noon on Monday through noon on Tuesday.  

"Residents should be prepared for 4-6 inches of rain to fall over the duration of the storm and strong winds with gusts of up to 60 mph are likely.  Widespread power outages and downed trees are also expected.  

"Governor McDonnell has declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth and you can get information about the state's preparedness here.    

"Residents should have made their own preparations in advance of the storm's expected arrival.

• Have a plan for your family to safely shelter in place if possible.
• Have flashlights and batteries on hand in case of power outages.  The use of candles is not recommended due to the risk of fire.
• Stock up on non-perishable food items, bottled water, and required prescription medication. You should have enough on hand to maintain your family for at least three days.
•  Clear all gutters and storm drains of leaves and debris to help prevent water damage to your home.
• Store all outdoor items such as furniture and grills that could cause damage if caught by high winds.
• Monitor local news and radio for weather and emergency updates.
