Dive Teams Locate Body of Rappahannock River Swimmer

Medical examiner called in after early Wednesday rescue, Fredericksburg Deputy Fire Chief Mike Jones said.

Fredericksburg and Stafford County dive teams found the body of a swimmer in the Rappahannock River early Wednesday morning after he jumped off a rock into the rapids and then went missing Tuesday night.

Units responded to the Rappahannock River in the 400 block of Riverside Drive on Tuesday night for a report of a missing swimmer. Jones said a dive operation started at about 11:30 p.m.

Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department posted on its Twitter account at about 12:10 a.m. that, "The Dive Group has advised Command that the victim has been located."

Three rescue swimmers from Falmouth and two from Fredericksburg were searching the area where the swimmer was last seen, according to witnesses.

A Virginia State Police helicopter was also called in for night vision thermal imaging equipment.

Jones said he is not sure of the swimmer's exact age and that he would release more information later this morning.
