Fredericksburg Election Results 2013: Higgs, Wood, Cole Win

In the gubernatorial race, the city voted 57.51 percent for McAuliffe.

Editor's Note:  The following numbers are the provisional results reported by the Virginia Board of Elections on Tuesday evening, Nov. 5, 2013.  Official results will be verified within the next day or two, Juanita D. Pitchford, Fredericksburg registrar said.

Fredericksburg Sheriff
Paul Higgs
was reelected Fredericksburg Sheriff with 76.02 percent of the vote.

"I'm feeling a whole lot better than earlier today," he told Fredericksburg Patch Tuesday night.  What led to his reelection?  "I think me and my department have done a good job.  We look out for the taxpayers and the citizens."

"Thank you to all of my supporters! You are wonderful," Ron Swaney wrote on Twitter.  "Although I did not win, I had so much fun in the Sheriff race."

Brenda Wood won a close race for Fredericksburg treasurer, with 52.60 percent of the vote.

District 88

Delegate Mark Cole (R) won reelection in District 88 with 61.43 percent of the vote. "This is the first contested race I've run since redistricting, and I'm feeling very gratified," Cole said.  "It took a team effort."

Cole said he saw his victory as a sign that people are happy with his service.  "I really work to keep in touch with people throughout the district," he said.

Cole's win was not helped by Fredericksburg, which went for Kathleen O'Halloran (D).  She received 52.50 percent to Cole's 47.50 percent in the portions of the city in District 88.

Precinct 101 - 709 votes (51.64%)

The Uncontested Races

Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Fredericksburg incumbent La Bravia J. Jenkins (I) held her post with 4,697 votes.

Commissioner of the Revenue for the City of Fredericksburg incumbent Lois B. Jacob (I) held her post with 4,705 votes.

House of Delegates member William J. Howell (R-VA-28) held his seat with 14,975 votes.  He earned 92.22 percent of the votes.  There were 1,264 write-in votes (7.78 percent).

Fredericksburg voted 57.51 percent for McAuliffe, 35.42 percent for Cuccinelli and 6.59 percent for Sarvis, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.
