FAMCC Women Adorned Exhibition Opening

The Fredericksburg Area Museum & Cultural Center is
pleased to announce the opening of Woman Adorned: Transcending Time,
Transforming Culture,
on Sunday, November 3, 2013Woman
Adorned
features selections from the Museum’s garment collection and
celebrates the history and accomplishments of women in Virginia’s history.

Through the use of clothing and imagery, Woman Adorned: Transcending
Time, Transforming Culture
, features five themes that explore how
women have “adorned’ themselves to interact with the larger world. The themes
are: Athletes and Aquabelles, Earth
Mothers, Freedom Fighters, Gender Benders, and Musicians
. This exhibition
also features Fredericksburg women including posters and quotes from members of
the legendary local band, Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women.  Selections from the renowned textile
collection of the Virginia Historical Society and the Valentine Richmond
History Center will also be included in the exhibit. These items will be on
display until the spring of 2014 when they will be replaced by garments from
the closets of women from the Fredericksburg community.  FAMCC’s Collections & Exhibitions
Director Chris Uebelhor stated, “We are happy to have the items on loan from
the Virginia Historical Society and the Valentine Richmond History Center, even
for just a short time. But we are especially excited to solicit items from the
Fredericksburg community as well.”  This
exhibit is guest curated by Dr. Lauranett L. Lee, founding curator of African
American History at the Virginia Historical Society. When asked about the
exhibit, Dr. Lee commented, “It is my
hope that visitors will come away from this exhibition with a greater
appreciation for women's history, and that they will see their closets from a
different, broader, perspective; and ask themselves, “does this represent who I
am?"” The exhibit is being designed by Quatrefoil and Associates of Laurel,
MD, who also designed the permanent exhibits in the Catherine W. Jones McKann
Center.  Woman Adorned will be on the first floor of the Town Hall/Market
House and will run for a year.
