Martin Smith, 76, of Fredericksburg died Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Southerland Place in Midlothian, VA.

Mr. Smith loved his dogs, Mookie and Lady.  He was an avid New York Giants and New York Yankee fan.

He enjoyed bowling and traveling throughout the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska.  While living in Vermont, he maintained a large garden and received great satisfaction from the contributions of fresh produce that he gave to the local food bank.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Jeannette A. Metzler; daughter, Sharon Belzile of Leesburg; son, Carl Smith of Long Island, NY; his former wife, Isabelle Smith of Long Island, NY; four grandchildren; his siblings, Neal Smith and Cornelia S. Cottingham both of Rockingham, NC;Claude Smith of Altas, OK and Ann S. Woody of Louisburg, NC;  and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Jeannette’s children and their families, Julie Lynn, Deb Shaw, Pennie DeGroot, Lori Mooney, Christie LeCroix, Mark Metzler and Ted Metzler.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Theodora Brewton Smith; his parents, Whiteford and Vada Smith; his siblings, Carrie “Sis” Hodges, Whiteford H. Smith, Louise Hollingsworth, Richard Smith, Samuel Smith and Eula Beth Smith.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
