Stuart Benton Herndon, 76, of Fredericksburg passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at his residence.

Born November 11, 1937 to the late Joseph B. and Freda R. Herndon, Stuart graduated from Stafford High School in 1956 where he played basketball and football. After several years at FMC plant, two years of regular Army service, and three years of National Guard Reserve, he went to work at NSWC Dalhgren where he worked for the next 35 years. After retiring in 1994, he became the treasurer for the Elks Lodge #875 for 16 years. He also belongs to the Knights of Pythias Lodge #22 where he enjoyed playing golf with the senior group. He also was a member of the Spotsylvania Eagles Lodge #4391 and Hollywood Church of the Brethren.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margie Herndon of Fredericksburg; sons Stuart Craig Herndon and wife Cathy of Stafford County and Wayne Benton Herndon and wife Jill of Spotsylvania County; grandsons Scott and Jackson; granddaughters Christa and Ciara; sister Peggy Winn and husband John of Stafford; and brother Dennis Herndon and wife Charlotte of Stafford.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 14 at the funeral home chapel. Inurnment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hollywood Church of the Brethren, 225 Ferry Rd, Fredericksburg, VA  22405.
