Accident Closes I-95 North of Fredericksburg Wednesday Morning

Virginia State Police urge motorists to avoid the area this morning.

Update 7:45 a.m. - An updated statement from the Virginia State Police this morning explained "a 2006 Honda CRV was northbound in the left lane when it lost control and ran off the right side of I-95. The Honda then overcorrected and struck a northbound tractor-trailer in the center lane of I-95.  The impact caused the tractor-trailer to jackknife and block all three northbound lanes. Meanwhile, the Honda continued on and struck a guardrail before finally coming to rest on the right shoulder."

All lanes are open at this time and delays are easing, but traffic is still very heavy along northbound I-95 just north of Fredericksburg.

Approximately 150 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in the accident, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Stafford County hazmat crews and VDOT responded to the scene to clean up the spill.

Original post - 5:59 a.m. Wednesday

A portion of I-95 northbound 138 in Stafford County is closed this morning due to a tractor trailer crash, Virginia State Police said.

The accident occurred at 11:32 p.m. Tuesday night. The tractor trailer jack-knifed across the northbound lanes and spilled diesel fuel, according to a police press release. At least two vehicles were involved in the accident and people in those vehicles were transported to local hospitals.

"As clean up gets underway, all northbound I-95 traffic is being detoured off the interstate in Stafford County at the 136 mile marker and brought back on at the Courthouse Road exit. Those traveling northbound on I-95 this morning through that area are advised to be prepared for major traffic delays," according to a Virginia State Police release.
