Downtown Fire Claims Three Pets

One resident displaced as flames cause $75,000 in damages to Caroline Street apartment.

Three pets, including a dog which had just returned from visiting residents at a local nursing home, died in a downtown apartment fire yesterday evening which displaced one resident.

Shortly after 8 p.m., the Fredericksburg Fire Department received several reports of flames coming out of the roof at 710 Caroline Street. Fire and rescue crews from Fredericksburg and Falmouth responded to the fire. Upon arriving, crews found a third floor apartment kitchen engulfed in flames and heavy smoke. 

Crews were quickly able to contain the blaze, however the fire rendered the apartment uninhabitable. The fire did as estimated $75,000 in damage to the building.

The resident of the apartment was not home at the time of the fire. Natatia Bledsoe, public information officer for the Fredericksburg Fire Department said that the resident has found housing. A second floor apartment and a ground floor business should be cleared by Monday or Tuesday. 

No firefighters were injured during the blaze. In addition to the dog, two cats also perished in the fire.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
