Child disappeared as crowd was preparing for fireworks, according to Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

A 7-year-old girl drowned just before a fireworks celebration in western Spotsylvania County, according to the Sheriff's Office.

At 8:30 p.m., deputies responded to the club house by the lake in the Lake Wilderness subdivision, where a large group had gathered.

The family had already been searching the area for a half hour when they called 911, according to SCSO spokesperson Capt. Jeff Pearce. Deputies began searching for the girl and learned she had been seen near the water shortly before she disappeared.

The child's body was discovered at 10:20 p.m. by the Spotsylvania County Fire Department's Rescue and Dive Team.

The remains were transported from the scene for examination at the State Medical
Examiner’s Office, according to Pearce.

The child's name has not been released while the rest of the family is notified.
