Injured Firefighter Gets Special Ride Home

Spotsylvania County Firefighter Chris Pitts got a ride back from a Richmond hospital in a fire truck today. Pitts has been in the hospital since a Friday night fire near Lake Anna, where a roof collapsed on him.

Spotsylvania County firefighter Chris Pitts is back home after sustaining third-degree burns on his left arm and shoulder while fighting a fire near Lake Anna after the "super derecho" struck the region.

. He was at VCU Medical Center in Richmond when he got his ride home in a Spotsylvania County fire truck.

"A very intense reunion full of happy tears!!" said Pitts' sister, Jenny via Facebook. "He's up and walking slowly...sore but "ok." We're so glad to have him home!!!"

Another firefighter injured his hand at the scene, but he was released from Mary Washington Hospital on Saturday. The home on Waddell Road near Partlow was destroyed by the blaze. Spotsylvania officials said a lightning strike caused the fire. 

A fundraiser will be held for Pitts from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Legends Sports Grille in Cosner's Corner, according to the Spotsylvania County Volunteer Fire Department's website. The restaurant is donating 10 percent of its proceeds to Pitts and his family.
