The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office has a new tool to fight crime, and it comes with hooves.
The Sheriff's Office introduced the new equestrian unit at the Stars and Stripes celebration last weekend.
Deputies on the unit are veteran horseback riders who have received additional training in mounted patrol, crowd control and search and rescue.
"The added height and visibility that the horses give their riders allow Deputies to observe a wider area," the Sheriff's Office noted in a statement. "It also allows people in the wider area to see the Deputies, which helps deter crime and assists people in finding Deputies when they need them."
