Quarry Diver Found in Water, Rushed to Hospital

Fredericksburg Fire Department crew finds victim. Police investigating scene.

Update 7/8/2014: The quarry swimmer, 19, was pronounced dead at Mary Washington Hospital.

Original Post, 7/7/2014: A male victim has been rushed to Mary Washington Hospital on Monday night after he was found down in the water at the Fredericksburg Quarry.

The Fire Department found the victim, according to Deputy Fire Chief Mike Jones.

All the rescuers and other people at the quarry were accounted for, he said.

Witnesses at the scene said the swimmer was trying to reach a rope swing when he disappeared beneath the surface, according to Fredericksburg.com.

Fredericksburg Police are on the scene to investigate, according to Jones.

Last week, a Virginia Tech wrestler drowned in a former quarry in Blacksburg. Darren Hankins was reportedly having trouble staying afloat and friends couldn't keep him above water, according to an Associated Press report.
