Second Arrest in Downtown Vandalism Spree

Two UMW students allegedly broke store front windows, uprooted trees and destroyed benches downtown, according to Fredericksburg City Police. Where an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Matthew North, 21, of Warrenton, has been arrested for destruction of property for his involvement as the second suspect in the recent downtown vandalism spree, Natatia Bledsoe, Fredericksburg Police spokesperson said.

Arthur Washer, 21, of Fredericksburg, was arrested April 28 for destruction of property for the same series of incidents.

Fredericksburg Police Officers received reports at 2:30 a.m. April 26 of two male subjects breaking glass in the 900 block of Caroline Street. Police found a trail of destruction leading from the 600 block of Caroline Street, through Market Square, and ending near Hyperion Espresso at William and Princess Anne Streets, according to a FPD release.

One of the officers remembered responding to a call in the 1000 block of Princess Anne within the previous week at an apartment belonging to some college students, Bledsoe said. Since there were lights on and movement inside the apartment following the discovery of the vandalism, the officers knocked on the door.

Eventually a young man came to the door and identified himself and two other occupants, according to police. One of those occupants, Arthur Washer, was interviewed at length, Bledsoe said.

Evidence led to a warrant being obtained against Washer. It was served on him on April 28, Bledsoe said. He was released on personal recognizance with an arraignment date of May 9.

The second involved party was also identified at the time. Matthew North was arrested May 3 and was released on bond.

Both men are University of Mary Washington students, Bledsoe confirmed.
