UPDATED: Stafford Has 12,911 Without Power From Derecho

Dominion crews were out all night trying to restore power.

Update: 7:17 p.m.: VRE is operating a full and normal schedule for Monday.

Fredericksburg Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike Jones said the Fredericksburg cooling shelter will be open Monday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hugh Mercer School at 2100 Cowan Blvd. in cooperation with the Fredericksburg Department of Social Services, City Schools and Fredericksburg Emergency Management. The City of Fredericksburg will also open the Maury Field House next to Maury Stadium off Kenmore Avenue from 4-8 p.m. Monday for those who have been effected by the heat and lack of power and need shower facilities. 

"Service animals are allowed at the shelter but for those with pets who want to escape the heat, PetsMart may be an acceptable alternative for a several hours to get your pets out of the heat," Jones said. "The store may have requirements for pets to be on a leash or in a kennel, please check with them."

Fredericksburg Emergency Services (Fire and EMS) have handled approximately 50 documented responses because of the storm Friday night.

"This included transformer fires, downed trees and power lines, removing persons trapped in stalled elevators, etc. All this is in addition to the normal volume of fire and EMS calls experienced every day," Jones wrote in an email.

He said the two most significant calls were for a tree that crashed into a building at 1430 Franklin St. during the height of the storm on Friday and assisting Stafford County with a house fire on Ferry Road the following early morning. The occupants were displaced in both incidents, he said.

Updated 3:39 p.m.: Fredericksburg City Public Schools will be closed Monday July 2. A Code Red for employees. Due to a power outage, UMW’s Dahlgren campus will be closed on Monday, July 2, and Tuesday, July 3. The campus will reopen on Thursday, July 5, unless notified otherwise. Stay tuned for updates.

Update 2:05 p.m.: The Virginia National Guard is staging personnel in Fredericksburg to be prepared for possible post-storm recovery operations. The Virginia Guard has been authorized to bring up to 300 personnel on state active duty and began staging approximately 110 personnel at the readiness center in Fredericksburg for possible missions starting Sunday.

Dominion Virginia Power said it plans to restore 90 percent to 95 percent of all outages by Thursday—its first estimate since the storm happened on Friday. More than 200,000 outages remain in Northern Virginia and about 22,000 of those are out of Stafford and Spotsylvania counties and Fredericksburg.

Update 11:23 a.m.: Got tons of tree debris to dispose of? The Regional Landfill on Eskimo Road will have extended hours today. It will be open until 5 p.m.

As of 9 a.m. Sunday, there are still about 21,000 homes in Fredericksburg, Stafford and Spotsylvania that do not have power after Friday's derecho, according to Dominion Virginia Power.

Most of the outages are in Stafford County, with 18,096 places still without power. In Fredericksburg, there are about 3,015 outages and in Spotsylvania there are about 1,112. Dominion Power is not providing estimated restoration times because of the sheer number of outages remaining in what Gov. Bob McDonnell called,

Stafford County is under a local State of Emergency and the governor called a statewide one Saturday.

College Heights in Fredericksburg is one neighborhood without power. If you know of downed power lines, call 866-366-4357.

"In large events like this we focus on getting the largest # of customers on the fastest, regardless of the order they're reported in," Dominion Virginia Power tweeted Sunday morning.

Fredericksburg will open its cooling station from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hugh Mercer School at 2100 Cowan Blvd. Please do not bring pets to the shelter. Only service dogs will be allowed. is allowing pets that are on a leash or in their pet carriers.

Stafford County's cooling center is at:  Rodney Thompson Middle School, 75 Walpole Ave., Individuals should bring personal care items such as sleeping bags, pillows, glasses, prescription medication, water and other items that they use on a daily basis. Officials there have not released yet if or when it will open.

Spotsylvania County's cooling station is at Thornburg Middle School.
