Suspect Discovered in Bushes, Talking on Phone

Law enforcement found the alleged thief when they heard him talking on his phone.

An alleged motorcycle thief was discovered when law enforcement officials searching for him heard him talking an his cell phone while hiding in bushes, according the Cpt. Mike Harvey of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rocco Wahl responded to the area of Peach Tree Drive and Blossom Wood Court at about 10 a.m. on Oct. 18, following a tip from the Stafford Sheriff’s Office about a subject who had just left that jurisdiction on a stolen motorcycle.

Wahl observed a subject on a motorcycle, the subject and cycle both matching the description given by Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

As Wahl attempted to stop the motorcycle, a short vehicle pursuit ensued, ending in a foot pursuit. The suspect fled on foot and took cover in bushes. He was eventually discovered as deputies heard him talking on his cell phone from the bushes.

Hurley Lee Dement, 21, of Spotsylvania was taken into custody without further incident, according to Harvey. He was charged and held under no bond for the following:

  • Felony Eluding
  • Possession of Stolen property (3 motorcycles)
  • Drive while license is revoked
  • Operate a motorcycle without a valid motorcycle license endorsement
  • Fictitious vehicle registration
  • Failure to stop at a stop sign
