As part of a larger scheme of educational initiatives to promote
student safety, the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with VA
Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (VA ABC), conducted an underage buyer
operation Aug. 28.
Sheriff’s office cadets ages 17-19 visited off premise establishments within the county that hold ABC licenses. They utilized accurate IDs and answered honestly when questioned about their age or birth date.
Fifty-six stores were visited and only three sold: Sunoco at 4600 Plank Road, Fast Mart at 11625 Brock Road and Food Lion at 10871 Tidewater Trail.
According to the sheriff's office, a compliance rate of 95 % is a positive reflection on the county’s businesses.
"This means they are taking the sale of alcohol to underage people very seriously,” said Spotsylvania Sheriff Roger Harris. “In most cases IDs were requested and scrutinized. This operation is keeping alcohol out of the hands of underage persons is a priority of this administration and my ultimate goal as sheriff is for 100% compliance for all businesses in Spotsylvania County.”
