UMW Basketball Coach Charged With DUI, Reckless Driving

Ron Wood has been the coach of the men's basketball team for 15 years, but he was placed on administrative leave this week after a DUI charge.

University of Mary Washington men's basketball head coach Rod Wood was charged with a DUI, refusing to submit to a blood or breath test and reckless driving this week.

The four-time Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year was placed on administrative leave and he did not coach in Saturday's regular season finale, a 73-70 loss to Wesley College.

Wood, 44, was pulled over at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday in the 300 block of Amaret Street, according to the police blotter. An officer can charge someone with a DUI when they refuse to submit to a blood or breath test if the officer detects an odor of alcohol on the breath or notices the person is having trouble walking or speaking and other physical signs that are indicative of alcohol consumption.
