Victim Identified in Amtrak, Pedestrian Accident

The engineer sounded the horn, tried to stop the train in time.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia has officially identified the victim of the Oct. 17 train accident 300 yards north of the grade crossing on Mine Road at Benchmark Road in Spotsylvania County as a 74-year-old man.

The victim is identified as Charles Hollowell, of Spotsylvania, according to Cpt. Mike Harvey of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office. His next of kin has been notified.

The investigation is still ongoing, but it appears the victim was crossing the tracks at a bend in the tracks at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, and was unaware of the approaching train, Harvey said. The engineer of the Amtrak train was able to sound his horn and apply the train's emergency brakes before striking the victim, according to Harvey.
