Project includes new bridge construction over Interstate 95, widening Fall Hill Avenue and extending Mary Washington Boulevard.

Traffic management in Fredericksburg received a $30 million shot in the arm Wednesday.

The Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $30.8 million contract for improvements to Fall Hill Avenue. The design-build contract went to Corman Construction Co. of Annapolis, Md.

According to the Department of Transportation, the project will:

  • Construct a new four-lane bridge on Fall Hill Avenue over Interstate 95;
  • Widen Fall Hill Avenue to a four-lane divided highway from Carl D. Silver Parkway to a roundabout adjacent to the Fall Hill Avenue bridge over the Rappahannock Canal at the proposed intersection of Fall Hill Avenue and the extension of Mary Washington Boulevard; and
  • Extend Mary Washington Boulevard from its terminus north of U.S. 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) to the roundabout intersection with Fall Hill Avenue new the Rappahannock Canal bridge.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2017.
