Chatham Bridge Lane Closures Wednesday

Two lanes will be closed during daytime hours March 20 for bridge repairs on the structure between Stafford and Fredericksburg, VDOT reports.

Two lanes will be closed on Chatham Bridge Wednesday between Fredericksburg and Stafford County so Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) staff can continue to fill a hole in an eastbound travel lane.

"Both eastbound lanes will be closed on the bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastbound," VDOT reported. Westbound traffic will narrow to a single lane and will cross the bridge in the westbound travel lanes. Traffic control will be provided by a flagging crew.

Tuesday a VDOT bridge maintenance crew installed formwork below the hole, supported by braces, VDOT reported. Wednesday the crew will pour concrete into the hole to form the bridge deck, and it will be covered with asphalt.

The hole was caused by a failed bridge joint under the pavement, VDOT said.  The hole, which measured two feet by three feet across, was discovered on Saturday.
