Confederate Marker to Move...Across the Street

A controversial stone marker honoring Confederate Civil War dead buried nearby may have found a new home not too far away from its current spot. An agreement between the Maury Commons Condominum Association and a local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will see the marker  moved across the street to the property of the Maury Commons complex.

Specific details of the agreement are not yet known, however former City Councilor Matt Kelly said that the agreement includes a provision for the location of a separate marker noting the nearby location of black grave sites also buried in the vicinity of Maury Commons. Later today, Roy Perry, 1st Lt. Commander of the Matthew Fontaine Maury Chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which erected the marker back in 2009, will meet with Al Littek, president of the Maury Commons Condominium Association to discuss the placement of the SCV marker on their property.

Currently, the SCV marker sits on city land on the corner of an island median near Maury Commons upon which the Fredericksburg Area Veterans Council had erected a monument to Fredericksburg soldiers who served in 20th and 21st century armed conflicts. 

On Tuesday, the SCV was on the losing side of a Circuit Court judgement which after it found that the SCV did not properly seek permission from the city of Fredericksburg to erect the marker. 

The SCV marker bears the name of more than 50 Confederate soldiers buried on the property of Maury Commons.
