Construction Will Temporarily Close Brooke Road at Potomac Creek Bridge

Detour route established for motorists traveling Brooke Road

Construction of a new bridge deck and beams over Potomac Creek on Brooke Road (Route 608) in Stafford County will require through traffic to use a detour around the bridge beginning Monday, March 28.

The project is expected to take four months to complete.

Multiple signs will be posted along the detour route to direct motorists around the work zone. The bridge will be closed to all traffic for the entirety of the project.

Access to the Virginia Railway Express train station at Brooke will be available throughout the project. Motorists can reach the train station entrance on Brooke Road from Andrew Chapel Road (Route 629) or Eskimo Hill Road.

The existing bridge deck will be replaced with a lightweight concrete deck, carried by steel beams. Railing will be added, and guardrail will be installed along the sides of Brooke Road on the roadway approach to the bridge.

Newer industry design standards for bridges means the reconstructed Potomac Creek Bridge will be upgraded to accommodate heavier vehicle weights.

To prepare residents for the project, the Virginia Department of Transportation posted electronic message boards on March 14 in the vicinity of the bridge, communicating the detour route.

Stafford County and VDOT held a joint citizen information meeting on the project on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in VDOT’s Fredericksburg District Auditorium in Stafford.

Project updates will be posted to the project webpage, www.virginiadot.org/projects/fredericksburg/route_608_brooke_road_bridge_deck_replacement_project.asp

The $600,000 design-build project was awarded to Bryant Contracting Inc.
