Doc Drop: Council Agenda - Jan. 10, 2012
Council to consider a number of high profile items in first meeting of 2012.
The first City Council meeting of the new year is a packed one.
It includes four public hearings for:
- The issuance of a special use permit to add 12 more beds to a 40 bed rehabilitation facility at 300 Park Hill Drive.
- The issuance of a special use permit to operate an insurance business at 630 Pelham Street.
- As well as two budget amendments to transfer 2011 budget encumbrances and capital and grant carryovers.
Perhaps the most eye catching item on the agenda is Mayor Thomas Tomzak's item under the council agenda entitled "Commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. and Poor Little Black Girls in 2012." (No link for that one)
What exactly is meant by Tomzak's inclusion of a reference to"Poor Little Black Girls" in an item calling attention to the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday is a bit of a mystery.
When asked about the item at a press conference earlier today Tomzak only replied "stay tuned."
Tomzak has in the past expressed disappointment over what he sees is the failure of multiple city agencies to effectively deal with the consequences of teenage pregnancies among minority populations.
The City Manager agenda sees the council consider:
- An incentive package for former Colonial Beach restaurateurs to relaunch their Happy Clam seafood restaurant on Sophia Street.
- Appropriating $18,000 to repair a collapsed slope on the developing Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Sunshine Ballpark.
- Suing the owners of 115 Young Street to force them to build a portion of the Virginia Central Railroad trail as per the terms of a 2003 special use permit issued to the owners.
- Appropriating $10,000 in funds to hire part-time employees to deal with a backlog of documents at the Fredericksburg Circuit Court Clerk's Office.
- Appropriating $10,000 to purchase new uniforms for the Fredericksburg Sheriff's Office.
- Appropriating 2011's $52,000 balance in capital fund money for the Fredericksburg public school system to the new year's budget.
