Express Lanes on Interstate 95 'On Track' for 2015 Opening

Construction on the new Interstate 95 express lanes should be completed by the end of 2014, with the lanes expected to open early next year, according to Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

“The progress on the 95 Express Lanes project is a visible reminder of the congestion relief and new travel choices that Virginians will have available to them in less than a year,” McAuliffe said in a statement. 

According to the governor's office, remaining work includes installing and testing new overhead signs, tolling gantries and other equipment, along with building new sound walls, storm water management ponds and completing final work on barriers, guardrails, paving and roadways.

"Make a Plan"

To prepare commuters who have traditionally used the HOV lanes, 95 Express Lanes has launched a new "Make a Plan" website to help drivers understand the new E-ZPass requirements once the express lanes are completed and answer questions about the new service.

“Many travelers use the HOV lanes today – whether for commuting, weekend or vacation trips – and it’s important that they familiarize themselves with new rules of the road for the 95 Express Lanes," said Kevin Ginnerty, Director of Project Delivery, Transurban.
